Position Summary: The Director of Payroll will be responsible for providing overall strategic direction for the time keeping and payroll function for ~ 9,000 employees in North America. The Payroll Director is expected to manage day to day payroll operations, support new and existing integrations, manage vendor contracts and relationships, and drive process standardization, automation, and improvement in process efficiency and effectiveness. This position will be responsible for the coaching, mentoring and leadership of individuals and managers that provide the day-to-day payroll support.


  • Define the overall strategy and vision for payroll function to improve automation while ensuring accurate, timely, secured, and compliant payroll processing
  • Oversee all facets of daily time keeping and payroll operations, ensuring compliance with corporate as well as federal, state and local laws, policies and regulations
  • Create and oversee the development, implementation and maintenance of payroll processes, policies, and objectives with a focus on short- and long-term planning
  • Develop strong client and stakeholder relationships and implement effective communication programs to transform payroll support model
  • Establish and maintaining exceptional business relationships with other corporate teams including HR, Legal, Tax, Treasury, Finance, Audit, Compliance and IT
  • Own payroll governance, internal controls and process documentation while striving for increased efficiency and effectiveness
  • Actively manage multiple and complex payroll vendor relationships
  • Monitor the activities of timekeepers in various plant facilities, providing guidance on payroll procedures and policies to ensure correct processing of data used in payment of payrolls
  • Provide subject matter expertise to support system integration and configuration requirements
  • Manage special projects as needed. Develops and implements projects and programs to manage payroll inadequacies and contribute to overall effectiveness of department
  • Plans and coordinates the production and distribution of all employee tax statements and notifications (e. g., W-2s) as required by law
  • Build and manage a superior Payroll team. Ensure the payroll team is properly staffed, supervised, trained and held accountable to performance targets.  The Director will determine what specific actions need to be taken to achieve targets
  • Participate in preparation of audit schedules to assist in implementing audits in the Payroll Department
  • Maintain the confidentiality of all payroll transactions and information


Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business or a related field. Master's degree is preferred
  • 10 years’ experience in a payroll leadership position for a global employer with multi entity, multi-state and union operations required
  • 5+ years’ experience managing and developing others required
  • International experience preferred
  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) preferred; CPM certification preferred
  • Excellent project management, time management and organizational skills, and ability to adapt in a fast-paced, changing environment
  • Experience with large scale mergers & acquisition preferred
  • Experience with Global Pay Rules
  • Experience working within a shared services environment
  • Experience with ADP and Kronos strongly preferred; Oracle Fusion a plus
  • Experience working in matrix environment with ability to work effectively across all levels and layers of the organization
  • Exceptional communication skills with ability to build solid relationships and influence internal stakeholders
  • Experience transforming a payroll function to one that is highly scalable and efficient
