Position Summary:

The Director of Fleet is responsible for overseeing the financial and service performance and measurement of private fleet operations. Responsible for managing fleet assets, including tractors and trailers.  Oversees the regulatory/safety compliance involving fleet operations.  Directs freight bill audit/payment activities of service suppliers ensuring correct and timely payment for fleet related invoices.  Works closely with all Business Units, Divisions and plants throughout the company to achieve service and cost goals involving the fleet.


  • Develops negotiation strategies and strategic relationships with service providers.
  • Responsible for the efficiency of the Fleet Backhaul program by assisting in the identification of backhaul opportunities and developing the processes to execute.
  • Develops and manages the coordination and implementation of action plans resulting from the review of data, reports and continuous improvement projects.
  • Responsible to monitor and ensure all contracts, insurance and safety ratings comply with corporate goals. Responsible to notify affected parties if the Provider should fall out of compliance.
  • Collaborates closely with Plant Operations to monitor inbound and outbound fleet costs and jointly develops and implements plans to reduce the costs.
  • Directs analytical support to identify the impact of provider rate changes and policy changes.
  • Manage, understand and negotiate fuel surcharge and accessorial charges with service providers and monitor trends in the industry.
  • Assists in the development of the freight budget as well as making adjustments to the budget based on changes in the transportation industry.
  • Establish documentation of Standard Operating Procedures of Fleet operational execution.
  • Monitors the activities of the inbound and outbound claims operations, reviewing and changing processes as needed.
  • Interacts with internal departments on project planning, continuous improvements and collaborative efforts including exploring unique transportation solutions.
  • Participates in suggesting new policies that support corporate initiatives. Initiates change designed to improve control and efficiency of the Transportation Department.
  • Prepares and delivers presentations.
  • Summarizes periodic project status and prepares reports for departmental and executive review.
  • Assists in the design of KPI and reporting processes for the Transportation group to ensure that Provider and internal department requirements are met.
  • Produces monthly reports on carrier performance and identifies action plans when performance is not meeting expectations.


Job Requirements


  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 12 years’ experience in transportation and/or fleet management.
    • Preferred masters degree/major in supply chain, logistics, transportation or business.
  • Highly self-motived with exceptional internal and external communication skills
  • Strong negotiation and analytical skills.
  • Able to work effectively in a multi-tasking environment.
  • Able to work constructively under stress and pressure.
  • Able to exhibit a high degree of professionalism.
  • Able to work with and interact effectively with all levels of management.
  • Knowledgeable of logistics solutions/Supply Chain Management.
  • Willing to travel up to 40% of the time for business purposes (US and Canada).
  • Experience with TMS and Route Optimization solutions.
  • Knowledge of DOT, 49 CFR, Customer and other governmental regulations.
  • Microsoft Office Suite expertise in Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
