Summary / Purpose of Position

This position is a dual rule position created to serve the purpose of working primarily as a production line operator but has added experience and is qualified to work as a shift driver as needed when the shift’s main driver is unavailable, absent or on vacation. This individual will have the responsibility of being available any time the plant’s shift driver is not available. This back-up shift driver is required to be the sole person to give the plant support in forklift driving to ensure machines do not get shut down or the entire production of the plant is not affected because one person is not available. When not performing as a shift driver this position will continue to perform the duties of a production operator—but acts as insurance on the shift to move into the role as a driver to insure we have the skill-set of someone to safely operate a forklift, in accordance to all current forklift / shift driver procedures to not affect the plants manufacturing capabilities.

Dimensions

This position is responsible for working with the shift production team and the plant’s logistics department. The position will continue to report to the shift supervisor or lead, with also shared interaction with the Shipping & Receiving Supervisor and interaction with the other warehouse loaders and shift drivers. The compensation of this position will be two-fold:

    • As a back-up driver this position is the first in line to assume role of shift driver
    • As back-up driver this position will provide coverage for all vacation requests other drivers have

Nature & Scope

This position is an extended skill-set position. It will require that this team member perform all the normal requirements and duties of a production operator in addition to being able to provide back-up support as a shift driver. Therefore, the position will require knowledge and the ability to perform both jobs and be up-to-date on the procedures of both jobs and understand that when there is not a shift driver available, this position has the requirement to fill in whenever a shift driver is late, absent, on vacation, or there is job abandonment. Naturally, when there is a shift driving opening, the individual holding this title would have the first choice to move in to the permanent role of the shift driver. This position creates a succession plan for shift drivers in the Bryan Plant by design.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: 

  • Operate all manufacturing equipment efficiently and safely
  • Safely operate machine to properly produce product and follow proper procedures for packaging to external customers
  • Remove or shift materials and/or finished products to facilitate proper flow
  • Demonstrates ability to meet production standards on specific assignments within required time.
  • Demonstrates ability to independently keep up with the work flow of running two Open Head Pail lines simultaneously.
  • Maintains good housekeeping and clean work areas in assigned space
  • Responsible for safety and quality throughout production
  • Clean equipment and area before, during, and after shift
  • Maintain clean work area through good housekeeping practices
  • Follow proper sorting and restacking instruction given by quality department
  • Assist in changeovers when called up by supervisor or front end operators
  • Performs other duties as required by Supervisor or Manager
  • When incumbent shift driver is no longer present, by being late, absent, on vacation or any other reason—this position will provide support and take over those job requirements as that a shift driver would normally perform
  • Performs all related shift driving duties when acting as a shift driver
  • Reads work orders or follows instructions to ascertain materials or containers to be moved.
  • Can demonstrate the safe operation of a lift truck and possess a valid tow motor license.
  • Will occasionally unload trailers or load trailers that go directly to customers as needed
  • Keeps informed of the latest OSHA and related safety procedures for the proper operating of the forklift.
  • Follows all known safety procedures for the safe handling of the propane used to fuel forklift.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Follows all safety rules and procedures and observes the operations to insure a safe environment.
  • Performs housekeeping duties as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned

Job Requirements

Education and/or Experience

High school diploma or G.E.D.; or one to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence and convey instructions or information.
  • Ability to perform simple math functions.
  • Ability to use units of weight measurement, volume, and size.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms.  The employee frequently is required to walk and sit. The employee is occasionally required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.  The employee may be required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.

 

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles released from the forklift, some raw materials stored in the warehouse are listed as mildly hazardous.  The noise level in work environment is moderate. This is a warehouse and although the work is in doors the warehouse is not climate controlled. The employee will also be exposed to the vibration of the forklift while riding it. There is no suspension system on a forklift to speak of.
